In Vivo Evaluation of Centrifugal Blood Pump for Cardiopulmonary Bypass—Spiral Pump

Abstract: The Spiral Pump (SP), a centrifugal blood pump for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), has been developed at the Dante Pazzanese Institute of Cardiology/Adib Jatene Foundation laboratories, with support from Sintegra Company (Pompeia, Brazil). The SP is a disposable pump with an internal rotor-a conically shaped fuse with double entrance threads. This rotor is supported by two ball bearings, attached to a stainless steel shaft fixed to the housing base. Worm gears provide axial motion to the blood column, and the ro… Show more

“…This test consists of maintaining the device under similar (head pressure and flow) conditions when implanted until device failure. An AAPB prototype was connected to a mock loop circulation system [4][5][6] for specific parameters register, and those registered parameters Head pressure in this system was maintained at 100 mm Hg, flow was 5 L/min. Those values represent the mean operation values for a LVAD during mechanical assistance and were considered as reference for the durability tests.…”

“…A problem commonly associated with blood pump is the occurrence of hemolysis that is the rupture of red blood cells membrane, causing the release of hemoglobin into the plasma. 9 The shear stress resistance of the red blood cells membrane varies with the exposure time. The simulation of a diversity of types of flow pumps is made from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools to assist in their projects, promoting an increase in their performance.…”
