Inclusion of Hermetia Illucens larvae or prepupae in an experimental extruded feed: process optimisation and impact on in vitro digestibility

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of extrusion on digestibility of different blends containing Hermetia illucens (HI) larvae or prepupae. Five blends of HI larvae or prepupae and wheat flour, in a ratio of 25:75, with or without sunflower oil addition, have been formulated as follows: prepupae þ wheat (no oil); prepupae þ wheat (low oil); prepupae þ wheat (medium oil); prepupae þ wheat (high oil); larvae þ wheat (no oil). Ether extract (EE) content in different blend was 31.5, 38.9, 46.3, 53.7 and 46.27 g kg … Show more

“…Nutritional quality Insects are regarded as an interesting alternative protein source for feed and are expected to be increasingly used in Pinotti, Giromini, Ottoboni, Tretola and Marchis Europe as a replacement for animal-derived proteins, especially in aquaculture (Spiegel et al, 2013;Jo and Lee, 2016), although they also have potential for other species (van Raamsdonk et al, 2017) and as a fat/energy source (Wang and Shelomi, 2017;Biasato et al, 2017;Schiavone et al, 2018). Their nutritional and technological properties are linked to the species, rearing system adopted and especially to the substrate used (Veldkamp and Bosch, 2015;Spranghers et al, 2017;Ottoboni et al, 2017a;Meneguz et al, 2018). Among the species reared, the BSF (Hermetia illucens), common housefly (Musca domestica) and yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) have the highest potential for large-scale production (Veldkamp and Bosch, 2015).…”

“…technological quality), without any effect on the digestibility of both organic matter and proteins. However, this study (Ottoboni et al, 2017a) considered a very simple blend (two ingredients), and the results require further investigation with a wider panel of blends and conditions.…”

“…Composition -Insects are natural preys and components of the diet of many farmed animals, but their nutritional value greatly varies according to the insect species and the rearing substrate (Gasco et al 2019a;Koutsos et al 2019). Though being considered an interesting alternative protein source for feed, the nutritional properties of insects depend on the species, rearing system and especially on the substrate used for their growth (Veldkamp and Bosch 2015;Ottoboni et al 2017a;Meneguz et al 2018;Danieli et al 2019).…”

“…Полученные данные согласуются с результатами исследований Ottoboni et al [30], который установил, что в процессе экструдирования смеси пшеницы и высушенных личинок по достижении определенной температуры содержание аминокислот линейно уменьшается. В наших опытах такое явление наблюдалось при экструдировании в диапазоне 121-135 ºС.…”
