“…Where noise reduction techniques have been reported in the literature, those routinely applied to the reconstructions of digital holograms of 3D objects are mean filtering, [21][22][23][24][25][26][27] Gaussian filtering, 28 median filtering, 11,26,27,29,30 subsampling, 29,31 and superposition of different reconstructions. 6,23 The DFF technique offers a number of significant advantages over its optical counterpart. First, no additional optical preprocessing or postprocessing is necessary in the capture of DHs.…”

“…In future work, we will look at creating more specialized filters (including complex valued ones) in an effort to improve on the results given here. The DFF technique also has an advantage over some existing DSP techniques, 6,7,23 in that it only requires a single DH. This implies that the method can be applied to all existing DHs captured previously.…”

“…We note that the addition of the intensity of multiple hologram reconstructions has been previously demonstrated in the literature [33][34][35][36][37]. In [33] the illuminating source was rotated between captures in order to generate a series of reconstructions of the same static object with statistically independent speckle noise terms.…”

“…In order to create the spatially partially coherent source a rotating diffuser was placed in the path of the coherent light source. This technique was also used by Kim [16] in 2004 to reduce speckle in holographic 3D displays and by Sucerquia et al [17] two years later who introduced static (but different) diffusers during the recording of DHs and then added together the resulting reconstructions. Also in 2006, Baumbach et al [18] added together reconstructions from laterally shifted holograms of an object to reduce the speckle content.…”
