Incorporating consumer choice into an optimization model for the German heat sector: Effects on projected bioenergy use

Abstract: Energy system optimization models (ESOM) are widely used to inform about energy transition strategies. The heterogeneity of consumers, especially in the heat sector, is rarely considered in these model types. Integrating consumer heterogeneity and behavioral factors into ESOMs may generate new insights for energy policy. In this study a literature review was conducted, identifying empirical data on consumer behavior for adopting residential heating systems. This data was integrated into an ESOM for the German … Show more

“…Finally, heat provision technologies using forest residues are characterized by comparably low GHG mitigation costs in the long term (woodchip boiler). However, renewable energy scenarios expect other alternatives to become very cost competitive (i.e., heat pumps) with even lower GHG mitigation costs [28]. boilers in all scenarios.…”

“…When defining technologies, flexible bioenergy was considered in the power sector, but there are many additional hybrid systems with bioenergy and other renewables on the horizon [28]. In addition, BECCS was not part of the investigation but might dramatically influence the technology preferences.…”
