Increases in pharyngeal Neisseria gonorrhoeae positivity in men who have sex with men, 2011–2015: observational study

Abstract: ObjectivesPharyngeal gonorrhoea disproportionately affects men who have sex with men (MSM). We explored temporal trends in pharyngeal gonorrhoea positivity among MSM compared with anorectal and urogenital positivity.MethodsData (2011–2015) were extracted from 41 publicly funded sexual health clinics participating in a national surveillance network. Positivity was defined as the proportion of first-visit testing occasions where gonorrhoea was detected. Logistic regression explored trends in positivity and corre… Show more

“…to limit the spread of infection as well as to detect gonococcal AMR. This 3-site testing should ideally use molecular diagnostics for the extragenital samples and be routine in MSM, considered in women particularly if sexual contacts of gonorrhoea patients, and be guided based on sexual history, risk, travel history and symptoms or signs in all other patients [8,12,[52][53][54].…”

“…Despite a well‐described body of research on STI prevalence among MSM [11‐13], there are few published studies of incident STI infection among MSM and TGW that examine factors associated with STI acquisition. These data are needed to draw stronger inferences about risk factors for STI acquisition and potential intervention targets for STI prevention.…”

“…Wspomniana strategia zapobiegania i kontroli zakażeń STI może zostać wykorzystana w szerszym zakresie, niż określony w samych celach strategii. W hrabstwie Kumbria w Wielkiej Brytanii z powodzeniem wykorzystano metodologię placówek ochrony zdrowia seksualnego, jak i epidemiologię chorób STI do śledzenia kontaktów COVID-19 [42].…”
