Industrial Ramie Growing on Reclaimed Ion-Adsorption Rare Earth Elements Mine Tailings in Southern China: Defibration and Fibers Quality

Abstract: Ramie plants (Boehmeria nivea) have been cultivated on ion-adsorption rare earth elements (REEs) mine tailings and showed a low ability to accumulate REEs, especially in the stems (REE= 24±17 mg kg -1 ) with higher concentration in leaves and roots (REE= 57 to 66 mg kg -1 ). Ramie individual fibers were isolated using three degumming processes: a traditional alkali treatment (AT), a steam explosion (SE) treatment after a neutral (SEN) or after a basic (SEB) impregnation. Cellulose-rich (> 80%) fine fibers wi… Show more

“…Therefor, Hemp crops have strong adaptability to soil and climate, and can achieve higher yields in arid, barren, and polluted soils 12 . During hemp planting, its roots and leaves decay in the soil, transforming them into organic matter, and increasing soil carbon sinks 13 . However, the nutrient content of ramie is signi cantly higher than that of grasses, and it has advantages such as easy planting and strong stress tolerance, making it suitable for developing into high-quality feed.…”

“…Due to the widespread interaction between microorganisms, correlation analysis has become an important part of microbial research 3,12 . In the study, the endophytes microorganisms have been known to produce bioactive secondary metabolites with unique structures that are often bene cial to the host plants 2,13 . Such microbe-host interactions are thus important determinants establishing plant biodiversity 14 .…”

“…Thus, as part of the authors' research program on the development of steam explosion, a steam explosion pretreatment process was used to degum bast fibers, such as ramie and hemp, and to produce fine fibers suitable for textile applications (Sauvageon et al 2017;Segovia et al 2021) and micro/nanofibrillated cellulose from Eucalyptus globulus barks (Nader et al 2022a,b). In the present work, steam exploded and/or phosphorylated beech sawdust was produced and analyzed for chemical composition, thermal properties, and fire resistance.…”

“…As part of our research program on the development of steam explosion (SE), we used this pretreatment process to degum bast bers such as ramie and hemp and to produce ne bers suitable for textile applications (Sauvageon et al, 2017;Segovia et al, 2021). The phosphorylation of SE-cottonized hemp bers by etidronic acid has been reported to heighten their ame retardant properties (Moussa et al, 2020).…”
