Infant Calming Responses during Maternal Carrying in Humans and Mice

Abstract: Our study has demonstrated for the first time that the infant calming response to maternal carrying is a coordinated set of central, motor, and cardiac regulations and is a conserved component of mammalian mother-infant interactions. Our findings provide evidence for and have the potential to impact current parenting theory and practice, since unsoothable crying is the major risk factor for child abuse.

“…Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) produced by mouse pups when they are isolated from their mother have been suggested to be a means by which the pups seek parental care. Notably, this form of communication is disrupted in various mouse models of autism (26)(27)(28). To determine if there is a defect in USV production in AS mice we recorded and quantified USVs emitted by wild-type and AS littermates when isolated from their homecage for 4 min.…”

“…Instead, the mother mouse uses her mouth to grasp a bit of skin at the back of the mouse pup's neck (Figure 2). Researchers were able to recreate this grip by pinching this same spot [3][4][5][6]. This way, the researchers had more control over the experiment.…”

“…For example, a child who is developing normally relaxes into his mother's embrace when she carries him. But some parents report feeling "as if (they) were holding a stone or a sack of flour, not a baby, " when their child is crying [5]. These were the parents of children who were not physically adjusted to fit parental carrying.…”
