Infantile Meningioma

Abstract: Childhood meningiomas are unusual, and meningiomas in patients less than 1 year of age are exceedingly rare. We report a case of a meningioma with malignant histologic features in a 6-month-old child who has had an excellent postoperative course. The pathologic features in relation to prognosis, as well as the magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of the case are presented. The litrature is reviewed and implications for therapeutic management are discussed.

“…Infantile meningioma was extremely rare. In 1994, Molleston et al[ 11] reviewed that only 27 cases of infants younger than 12 months with meningiomas had been reported in the literature. In 1998, Erdincler et al [7] reported that there were only 2 (6.9%) infantile meningiomas in a series of 29 cases of childhood meningiomas.…”

“…It was reported that cystic generation was observed in 13–50% of meningiomas in children but in only 2–4.6% of adult meningiomas [2, 9, 11]. Of the 122 childhood meningiomas with detailed CT appearances of tumor density we reviewed, the incidence of tumor calcification, cystic generation and intratumoral hemorrhage was, respectively, 14.8, 21.3 and 1.6%, any of which was higher than that in adults [1, 2,4,5,6, 8].…”
