The aim of the present study was to develop a microemulsion (ME) containing Alpinia galanga oil (AGO), 1,8-cineole (C), or methyl eugenol (M) as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) for enhancing their antimicrobial activities. Agar diffusion, broth microdilution, and killing kinetics were used for antimicrobial evaluations. The ME composed of 30% API, 33.4% Tween 80, 16.6% ethanol, and 20% water appeared as translucent systems with droplet size and polydispersity index of 101.1 ± 1.3 nm and 0.3 ± 0.1, 80.9 ± 1.1 nm and 0.4 ± 0.1, and 96.6 ± 2.0 nm and 0.2 ± 0.1 for ME-AGO, ME-C, and ME-M, respectively. These ME formulations showed minimum bacterial concentrations of 3.91–31.25 µg/mL and 50% fungal inhibition concentrations of 1.83 ± 0.27–0.46 ± 0.13 µg/mL, 2–4 times stronger, and faster kinetic killing rate than their respective API alone. Keeping the ME formulations at 4 C, 25 C, and 40 C for 12 weeks did not affect their activities against fungi and Gram-negative bacteria, but the high temperature of 40 C decreased their activities against Gram-positive bacteria. It is concluded that ME is a promising delivery system for AGO and its major compounds to enhance their water miscibility and antimicrobial activities.

Fusarium graminearum is a leading plant pathogen that causes Fusarium head blight, stalk rot, and Gibberella ear rot diseases in cereals and posing the immense threat to the microbiological safety of the food. Herein, we report the green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles from Syzygium aromaticum (SaZnO NPs) flower bud extract by combustion method and investigated their application for controlling of growth and mycotoxins of F. graminearum . Formation of SaZnO NPs was confirmed by spectroscopic methods. The electron microscopic (SEM and TEM) analysis revealed the formation of triangular and hexagonal shaped SaZnO NPs with size range 30–40 nm. The synthesized SaZnO NPs reduced the growth and production of deoxynivalenol and zearalenone of F. graminearum in broth culture. Further analysis revealed that treatment of mycelia with SaZnO NPs resulted in the accumulation of ROS in the dose-dependent manner. Also, SaZnO NPs treatment enhanced lipid peroxidation, depleted ergosterol content, and caused detrimental damage to the membrane integrity of fungi. Moreover, SEM observations revealed that the presence of diverged micro-morphology (wrinkled, rough and shrank surface) in the macroconidia treated with SaZnO NPs. Taken together, SaZnO NPs may find a potential application in agriculture and food industries due to their potent antifungal activity.

The use of synthetic pesticides is limited due to increasing environmental pollution and developing pest resistance, as well as the increasingly confirmed negative impact of these compounds on human health. At the same time, the demand for food grown in the spirit of organic farming is increasing. Therefore, as part of Integrated Plant Protection (IPM), biopesticides are used, i.e., substances of natural origin that are characterized by low toxicity to non-target species and easy availability. Such substances include, among others, compounds found in the bark of the Ceylon cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum verum J.Presl), such as eugenol, trans-cinnamaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde. However, the mechanism of their action has not been sufficiently researched. Therefore, this study presents the results of the impact of these compounds on the important pest of cereal crops and food stores, and - at the same time - a model organism - Tenebrio molitor beetle. The tested compounds were administered by injection, inhalation, with food or one of two contact routes: by immersing the tested larvae or by contacting them with substratum soaked in an appropriate solution of the tested compound. The results allowed us to determine the LT50 parameter, and the probit analysis carried out the LC20/30/50/95 values. The obtained results also allowed to conclude that the most effective route of administering cinnamon bark compounds is contact and injection, and the most effective is eugenol. The impact of the tested compounds on the morphological malformations of T. molitor larvae was also documented and discussed.
