Influence of polarity on mechanical properties of dissimilar resistance spot welds of DP 600/AISI 304 steels

Abstract: The influence of polarity during resistance spot weld (RSW) of dissimilar lap joints on mechanical properties and failure mode is assessed in this work. A dissimilar lap joint was set using DP 600 dual phase steel with AISI 304 stainless steel. The experiments were performed on a mediumfrequency direct current spot welding machine with proper data acquisition of voltage and welding current. Temperature evolution was also acquired by using IR camera. The mechanical properties of spot welds were evaluated by usi… Show more

“…The selection of the polarity to obtain the dissimilar welded joint was made considering the results of a previous research [13]. This study showed that polarity (+)DP600/(-)AISI304 presented the best mechanical properties and the highest load capacity, 33% higher than those obtained with polarity (-)DP600/(+)AISI304.…”

“…There are few studies on DP600 -AISI304 dissimilar welding. Espinel et al [13], studied the influence of polarity during RSW of dissimilar DP600 steel and AISI 304 stainless steel. The authors concluded that the positions of the sheets (+)DP600/(-)AISI304 and (+)AISI304/(-)DP600), i.e.…”

“…Mid-frequency direct current technology applies single-pulse welding with constant current regulation. It helps to improve the welding quality [6][7][8]. In addition, mid-frequency direct current technology contributes positive influence on the mechanical properties and has improved the strength capability of resistance spot welding aluminum joints [8].…”

“…It was found that the proposed lower electrode had some advantages in welding the three-sheet welding compared with conventional electrodes or hollow electrodes. Hernández et al [10] assessed the influence of polarity during resistance spot weld of dissimilar lap joints between DP 600 dual-phase steel and AISI 304 stainless steel on mechanical properties and failure modes. Jaber et al [11] investigated the microstructure, failure mode transition, peak load, and energy absorption of spot welded DP600 dual-phase steel during the tensile-shear test.…”
