Influence of Processing on the Mechanical Properties of Ti-6Al-4V-Based Composites Reinforced with 7.5 mass% TiC and 7.5 mass% W

Abstract: 7.5 mass% TiC and 7.5 mass% W powder blends were densified with Ti-6Al-4V blends by combined cold and hot isostatic pressing (CHIP) method to result in three types of composites with differing processing histories, namely hot isostatic pressing (HIPping), extrusion, and casting, which were compared with their monolithic counterparts. Tensile and microhardness tests, along with compressive testing, were carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of powder metallurgy (P/M) Ti-6Al-4V-7.5%TiC-7.5%W compo… Show more

“…[1][2][3] These mechanical properties, as well as abrasion resistance and hardness, can further be improved by incorporation of stable reinforcing ceramic particles such as TiC with high modulus and hardness. [4][5][6] Titanium metal-matrix composites are usually processed by powder metallurgy, using pressure to densify metal/ceramic blends via hot pressing, hot isostatic pressing, or extrusion. 4,[7][8][9] Since residual porosity adversely affects ductility of these and most other MMCs, the densification of titanium/ceramic powder blend has been the subject of various studies.…”

“…However, homogeneous structure, production of complex geometries and improved mechanical properties are the possible features attributed to the CAD systems [12]. In the same vein, complex parts can be produced as one single component through the LMD process, without requiring later assembly [13].…”
