Influence of production system and feeds on performance, carcass traits and estimated energy balance of autochthonous Gochu Asturcelta pigs

Abstract: Aim of study: To assess the effects of rearing system (extensive, ES; semi-extensive, SES) and feeds (grazed woodland, acorns, chestnuts, compound feed) on the performance, carcass traits and energetic balance of autochthonous Gochu Asturcelta pigs. Area of study: Asturias (Spain). Material and methods: In two successive years, a total of 58 immunocastrated Gochu Asturcelta pigs (25 females, 33 males), with an initial weight of 93.39 ± 3.36 kg and mean age of 6.82 ± 0.24 months, were randomly divid… Show more

“…Gochu Asturcelta individuals are rustic-prolific pigs with slow growth but are well adapted to specific local environments and to using locally available feedstuffs. The characterization of carcass yields and meat quality while keeping traditional extensive or semi-extensive rearing systems is initiated only [22,23]. After the foundation of the breeding program, a strict mating policy was implemented aiming at keeping founder contributions balanced across generations by prolonging the reproductive career of the founders and their direct descendants for as long as possible [17].…”

“…They are resistant and adapt to the environment easily. Gochu Asturcelta pigs have been traditionally reared in the extensive system in Ibero-Atlantic deciduous forests [56,57]. The origin of the Majorcan Black breed is uncertain, but the existence of pig livestock in Mallorca dates back to the period of the first settlers, approximately 3500 BC.…”

“…The skin colour shows a great variety; the Gochu Asturcelta population can have white, black, or spotted coats, and some appear to have belt-like patterns. The breed risked extinction in the 20th century and was revived only recently [37]. The SDG local risk status is defined as "at risk" with "endangered maintained".…”
