Influence of the antibacterial herbs, Solanum trilobatum, Andrographis paniculata and Psoralea corylifolia on the survival, growth and bacterial load of Penaeus monodon post larvae

“…Citarasu et al (1998Citarasu et al ( , 2003 demonstrated this in P. indicus postlarvae (PL20) reared for 10 days on a diet enriched in antibacterial herbs, stresstol or cod liver oil: these P. indicus postlarvae showed 100% stress resistance when treated in 0& salinity for 1 h. Similarly, in the present study we observed that the stress resistance was improved to a maximum of 31 and 32%, respectively in hypo-and hyper-salinities (0 and 50&) in P. monodon postlarvae reared for a period of 25 days (from PL15 to PL40) on a diet of herbal product-bioencapsulated Artemia. Antibacterial/anti-stress herbal extracts such as Solanum trilobatum, Andrographis panniculata, Aegle marmelos and Psoralea corylifolia were fed to the infected shrimp P. monodon postlarvae by means of a bioencapsulated Artemia diet by Citarasu et al (2003). In this experiment the postlarvae showed significant resistance to the bacterial infection and improved survival and growth compared to the postlarvae fed non-enriched Artemia.…”
