Happiness-oriented people are vital in every society; this is a construct formed by three different types of happiness: pleasure, meaning, and engagement, and it is considered as an indicator of mental health. This study aims to provide data on the levels of orientation to happiness in higher-education teachers and students. The present paper contains data about the perception of this positive aspect in two Latin American countries, Mexico and El Salvador. Structure instruments to measure the orientation to happiness were administrated to 397 teachers and 260 students. This data descriptor presents descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation), internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha), and differences (Student’s t-test) presented by country, population (teacher/student), and gender of their orientation to happiness and its three dimensions: meaning, pleasure, and engagement. Stepwise-multiple-regression-analysis results are also presented. Results indicated that participants from both countries reported medium–high levels of meaning and engagement happiness; teachers reported higher levels than those of students in these two dimensions. Happiness resulting from pleasure activities was the least reported in general. Males and females presented very similar levels of orientation to happiness. Only the population (teacher/student) showed a predictive relationship with orientation to happiness; however, the model explained a small portion of variance in this variable, which indicated that other factors are more critical when promoting orientation to happiness in higher-education institutions.

El compromiso por los estudios, la dedicación y la satisfacción académica, entre otras variables, pueden ser desencadenantes del engagement, un estado positivo vinculado con el estudio o trabajo. Sin embargo, si prestamos atención a los adolescentes, existen otras variables que pueden preceder al engagement académico. Desde hace unos años, hay una gran cantidad de investigadores que han mostrado una tendencia a estudiar el tema del engagement académico y la Inteligencia Emocional (IE) debido a su relevancia. Por este motivo, la presente revisión pretende analizar la investigación previa sobre la relación entre estas variables. El objetivo principal es analizar si existe o no relación entre las variables de engagement académico e Inteligencia Emocional en adolescentes. Los estudios revisados muestran resultados que indican la existencia de correlaciones entre las variables de engagement académico e IE en los adolescentes. Finalmente, hay que hacer hincapié en la relación existente entre el engagement académico y la inteligencia emocional para conseguir que los adolescentes desarrollen habilidades emocionales y, consecuentemente, se sientan satisfechos académicamente.

A large number of determinants influence the academic engagement of university students. However, positive influences that can be encouraged by the university have not been thoroughly studied. Most psychological research has been conducted in developed countries. Given the importance of understanding and encouraging university students in Latin America, it is essential to increase the quantity of research focused on personal traits and their association with better performance by university students. Two positive traits that have been shown to improve performance in a variety of areas are emotional intelligence and orientation to happiness. However, little is known about the relationship between these two positive aspects and university student engagement. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of emotional intelligence and orientation to happiness on university student engagement in three Latin American countries: Mexico, Colombia, and El Salvador. A total of 621 students answered a quantitative instrument that evaluates the three variables of interest. A model of structural equations was carried out in order to verify the direct impact that emotional intelligence and orientation to happiness have on university student engagement. The model explained 38% of the variance of university student engagement, indicating that these two positive personal traits can enhance interest and performance in scholarly activities by university students. Higher education in Latin America often focuses on increasing the knowledge of their students; however, these results indicate that promoting personal development, such as greater orientation toward happiness and emotional intelligence, can produce better results.
