In this paper, we defend the study of semantic variation from a cognitive sociolinguistics perspective. Through a case study on the semantic variation of 'abortion' in Spanish newspapers' comments, we investigate quantitatively the influence of the independent factors ('source', 'date', 'ideology', 'gender', 'quote') on conceptual onomasiological variation. The chi-square tests show that 'ideology' and 'quote' affect significantly the preference for direct (to abort) or indirect expressions (to murder) and for particular conceptual bases (e.g. DEATH/TO KILL, NOT HAVE A BABY, TRIP TO LONDON …), pointing to two different conceptualizations of 'abortion' for defenders and detractors. By demonstrating the entrenchment of particular construals in their established discourses, we exemplify the indexical power of semantic variation.

For each case, responsibility has radically different interpretations: for the first, abortion is considered morally irresponsible, because the woman didn't avoid pregnancy and she didn't bear with the consequences, in the lighter version, or because she killed her future child, in the stronger version (Observatorio de Salud de la Mujer 2005; Ramos 1982). For the second, abortion is morally responsible because it avoids having an unwanted child or having a child in unfavourable circumstances (idem).…”

This paper analyses the linguistic resources used by speakers to profile the participants in taboo actions, focusing on expressions for the concept abortar 'to abort' in Spanish sociolinguistic interviews. The tokens referring to the action are analysed in terms of linguistic features that affect agentivity at the level of verbs, subjects and objects. The combination of different linguistic features is classified in three levels of agentivity (prototypical agents, non-prototypical agents and non-agents) with various sublevels. The presence of modals further contributes to reducing agentivity, causing the maximally agentive profiling to be rather infrequent. Second, though the direct construal abortar is generally preferred, the levels of agentivity interplay with onomasiological variation. Third, social variables are not significantly correlated with the levels of agentivity. The paper concludes that mitigating agentivity is a euphemistic strategy against the taboo of a fully agentive woman who aborts, based on the cultural conceptualization of unwanted abortion.

RESUMENEste trabajo surge de la necesidad de abordar los problemas de salud desde un enfoque holístico que permita comprender la perspectiva del propio sujeto en la definición, vivencia e interpretación de su situación y su contexto. Presentamos aquí el estudio cualitativo realizado sobre un colectivo de mujeres castellano-manchegas que demandan y reciben Técnicas de Reproducción Asistida (TRA). La práctica de grupos de discusión y su posterior análisis ha permitido captar las percepciones y representaciones de estas mujeres en torno a una serie de dimensiones que estructuran su propio autoconcepto, sus relaciones y su vivencia de un proceso que puede constituir la consecución o frustración de todo un proyecto vital. Tratándose de un ámbito donde se imbrican aspectos sociales, culturales, simbólicos y biomédicos, este enfoque de investigación pretende propiciar el trabajo conjunto de las ciencias sociales y de la salud para complementar y enriquecer ambos campos de conocimiento. In this context, where social, cultural, symbolic and biomedical aspects are involved, the cooperative work of social scientists and healthcare professionals can contribute to the advancement of both fields of knowledge, and to their mutual integration.
