The purpose of the study was to develop a less hydrophilic, and therefore more useful, material from orange waste produced in large quantities by the food industry. A new derivative of industrial orange waste was synthesized via esterification with maleic anhydride. The reaction was confirmed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the degree of substitution of the hydroxyl groups was 0.39 ± 0.01, as determined by a back-titration method. A major change in physical structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flake-like structure of orange waste changed to a sponge-like structure after the reaction, which involved an increased volume and a reduced density by approximately 40%. The sponge-like structure was represented as an agglomeration of particles with a low specific surface area of 2.18 m 2 /g and a mean pore diameter of 10.7 nm. Interestingly, the grafted orange waste seemed to become more hydrophobic, which was confirmed by a contact angle test; however, the material absorbed more water vapor. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed a thermally more uniform, though, less heat-resistant material. This work suggests a possible way of utilizing orange waste via synthesizing a renewable material with possible applications as a filler in biocomposites.

Traumatic brain injury is among the most common causes of death and disability in youth and young adults. In addition to the acute risk of morbidity with moderate to severe injuries, traumatic brain injury is associated with a number of chronic neurological and neuropsychiatric sequelae including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. However, despite the high incidence of traumatic brain injuries and the established clinical correlation with neurodegeneration, the causative factors linking these processes have not yet been fully elucidated. Apart from removal from activity, few, if any prophylactic treatments against post-traumatic brain injury neurodegeneration exist. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of traumatic brain injury and neurodegeneration in order to identify potential factors that initiate neurodegenerative processes. Oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and glutamatergic excitotoxicity have previously been implicated in both secondary brain injury and neurodegeneration. In particular, reactive oxygen species appear to be key in mediating molecular insult in neuroinflammation and excitotoxicity. As such, it is likely that post injury oxidative stress is a key mechanism which links traumatic brain injury to increased risk of neurodegeneration. Consequently, reactive oxygen species and their subsequent byproducts may serve as novel fluid markers for identification and monitoring of cellular damage. Furthermore, these reactive species may further serve as a suitable therapeutic target to reduce the risk of post-injury neurodegeneration and provide long term quality of life improvements for those suffering from traumatic brain injury.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG :Die strukturellen und verfahrenstechnischen Gesichtspunkte, welche bei Vernetzungsreaktionen in Baumwoll-Cellulose auftreten, wurden an Hand von Literaturangaben eingehend beleuchtet. Aus den hierbei erhdtenen Ergebniasen wurden, unter Zugrundelegung einer strukturellen und chemisch-reaktiven &iichkeit zwischen nativer und regenerierter Cellulose, Vernetzungsmittel und -methoden ausgewiihlt, welche fiir das Studium des Einflusses einer Vernetzung von Zellglas auf dessen Gaspermeabilitat optimal erschienen.Es wurde gefunden, da13 die angewandten Vernetzungsmittel bei gleichen molaren Konzentrationen in der Folie die Permeabilitiit (P *) verschieden stark beeinflussen. 195H. NIEBERQALL nen an Vernetzungsmittel mit zunehmender Herabsetzung von P * ab. Wenn die hochkristallinen, semikristallinen und amorphen Bereiche der Cellulose gleichzeitig vernetzt werden konnen, wie es beim FA der Fall ist, dann entsteht (bei geniigend starker Vernetzung) ein sehr starres Gefuge, das infolge seiner Dimensionsstabilitlt bei hderungen der rel. F. nur noch eine geringe Abhangigkeit des P * von der rel. F. zeigt, bei gleichzeitiger Verlagerung der P*-Werte nach solchen, wie sie eine unbehandelte Folie bei mittleren und niedrigen rel. F. aufweist. Wenn uberwiegend amorphe und semikristalline Bereiche geniigend stark vernetzt werden, d a k ist zwar eine Ordnungsanderung in den kristallinen Bereichen mit der rel. F. noch moglich, was einer gro13eren Abhiingigkeit von P * von der rel. F. entspricht, gleichzeitig werden die P*-Werte jedoch schon von 64 yo rel. F. abwSirts unter den P *-Wert einer unvernetzten trockenen Folie verlagert.Vergleicht man die Permeabilitat einer handelsiiblichen Saranfolie (dichteste in der Praxis verwendete einfache Folie) mit einer DMDHAH-vernetzten Zellglasfolie bei einer mittleren rel. F. von 64 yo, d a m erhalt man eine Verbesserung der Gasdichtigkeit vom 340-bis zum 1100-fachen. Die DMDHAH-vernetzte Folie ist sogar doppelt so gasdicht wie eine Metall-Verbundfolie aus Saran-Aluminium-Zellglas, welche die gasdichteste in der Praxis verwendete Mehrfach-Verbundfolie ist. SUMMARY :Aspects of crosslinking cotton-cellulose are given in view of structure and processing by means of informations from literature. From results found there, crosslinking agents and methods were selected (underlying the similarity of the structure and reactivity of native and regenerated cellulose), which seemed to be optimal for studies of the influence of crosslinking cellophane to the resulting gas-permeability.Various fixed crosslinking agents are found to have a quite different influence on the permeability (P*) of foils at equal molare concentrations of this agents.
