Inhibition Activity of Garlic (Allium sativum) Skin Aqueous Extract on Mastitis Causing Microorganisms

Abstract: Mastitis in dairy caused by microorganisms, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, is a serious problem due to its effect in decreasing quality and quantity of milk production up to 53.5%. Mastitis precautions are generally carried out using iodine solution and has risk leaving residue both on the udder and milk produced. Natural antimicrobial compounds need to be developed to solve iodine residues. An alternative natural ingredient that can be used is the skin of garlic which is known contains allic… Show more

“…Garlic extract concentration was found to be highly significant in inhibiting the growth of mastitis-causing bacteria [30]. Supplementing the diet of dairy cows with garlic increased milk production from 12.9 to 20.1 kg and ensured optimal milk production activity, as demonstrated by a 41.09% reduction in SCC in milk (from 3.48 × 10 5 mL −1 to 2.05 × 10 5 mL −1 ) [31].…”

“…There are many reports of mastitis cases in Indonesia, including clinical and subclinical mastitis (Syamsi et al, 2019). While farmers are generally familiar with clinical mastitis from its recognizable visual symptoms, subclinical mastitis is not directly recognized due to invisible symptoms (Sutarti et al, 2003).…”

“…Several problems can occur in this gland, and the most common is mastitis. Mastitis is a common disease in mammals including dairy livestock industry, which is very detrimental since it decreases the quantity and quality of milk production (Syamsi et al, 2019).…”
