Inhibitory Activity of Essential Oils of Mentha spicata and Eucalyptus globulus on Biofilms of Streptococcus mutans in an In Vitro Model

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory activity of the commercially available essential oils of Mentha spicata (spearmint) and Eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus) on Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 biofilms in vitro, emulating dental plaque conditions. The composition of the essential oils (EOs) was determined using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), with the main metabolites being Carvone (57.93%) and Limonene (12.91%) for Mentha spicata and 1,8-Cineole (Eucalyptol) (65.83%)… Show more

“…Recently, essential oils from Eucalyptus globulus with 1,8-Cineol as the main metabolite (65.83%) showed anti-microbial activity against Streptococcus mutans even in biofilm cultures, emulating dental plaque conditions [ 41 ]. Biofilm formation is a major limiting factor concerning the efficacy of anti-microbial treatment due to low penetrability.…”

“…In this context, essential oils from Eucalyptus globulus with 1,8-Cineol as the main metabolite (65.83%) have been shown to inhibit Streptococcus mutans even in biofilm cultures, emulating dental plaque conditions 34 . It is most likely that biofilm formation is a major problem concerning the efficacy of anti-microbial treatment due to limited penetrability.…”

“…Generally, EOs have high contents (20-70%) of two or three major phytoconstituents; other compounds are quantified in trace concentrations [3]. The pharmacological potential of EOs has been extensively explored: ranging from antioxidant [4,5], anti-inflammatory [6,7], immunomodulatory [8,9], antinociceptive [10,11], antiulcer [12,13], anticancer [14,15], insecticidal [16,17], larvicidal [18,19], anthelmintic [20,21], antiviral [22,23], antibacterial and antibiofilm [24][25][26][27][28] properties.…”
