Inhibitory Effects of Chios Mastic Gum on Gastric Acid Secretion by Histamine-Related Pathway in a Rat Model and Primary Parietal Cells

Abstract: The object of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effects of chios mastic gum (MG) on gastric acid secretion in an ethanol-induced SD rat model and primary parietal cells. Rats were randomly divided into four groups: Vehicle (normal group), Control (treated with ethanol), MG50 (treated with ethanol and mastic gum at 50 mg/kg b.w), MG100 (treated with ethanol and mastic gum at 100 mg/kg b.w). Groups treated with both MG50 and MG100 showed attenuation of gastric mucosal injury, sub-epithelial loss, hemo… Show more

“…Among these, the EtOH-induced model is most widely used to investigate the efficacy of potential drugs because it is independent of gastric acid secretion and resembles acute gastric ulcers in humans [ 9 ]. Furthermore, several strains of rodents including SD rats, Wistar rats, C57BL/6 mice, ICR mice and BALB/c mice have been utilized to conduct most experiments in studies for gastric ulcer, although ICR mice are most commonly used for these studies [ 2 5 10 11 12 ]. However, most used only one strain of one animal species to produce animal models for gastric ulcer and evaluate the anti-gastric ulcer activity of some compounds and extracts.…”

“…The stimulated gastric acid secretion increases internal pH and gastric mucosal damage (Nam et al. 2014). The gastritis symptoms can progress further to damage of submucosa or muscular layers in the stomach wall, which is called a gastric ulcer.…”

“…The gastric juice was centrifuged at 3,000 rpm for 20 min and the total acidity was assayed (Nam et al. 2014). Briefly, 0.5% dimethylaminobenzene alcohol solution and 1% phenolphthalein alcohol solution were added to the gastric juice supernatant.…”
