Initial Rotor Position and Magnetic Polarity Identification of PM Synchronous Machine Based on Nonlinear Machine Model and Finite Element Analysis

Abstract: In this paper, a DC voltage pulse injection based method is proposed to detect the initial position and rotor polarity of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The rotor angle vibration is expressed analytically as a function of the injected pulse. The nonlinear numerical simulation model of PMSM is employed, in which the saturation saliency is incorporated as well as the structural saliency. The proposed scheme is simulated and verified by using the nonlinear model and a two-dimensional finite element me… Show more

“…The initial magnet polarity and rotor position estimation is necessary because the phase inductance frequency is twice the motor electrical frequency, and a voltage pulse injection method is employed [19]. Once the rotor position θ is obtained, the rotor speed, d-axis and q-axis currents can be calculated naturally, all of these variables are necessary for FOC operation.…”

“…Therefore, the determination of an appropriate voltage pulse for magnetic polarity identification is difficult becuase the motor parameters are different. In Refs [20] and [21], six nonzero voltage vectors are applied for the same period. The sinusoidal behavior of the six current differences can be used to determine the absolute position angle so that magnet polarity identification can be spared.…”

“…At the first stage, the possible d-axis is observed from excited high frequency signals. Most commonly, rotating voltage injection in the stationary reference frame is applied, which may be either continues injection [13][14][15][16] or discrete injection with three pulses [17][18] or twelve pulses [19]. Alternatively, the pulsating sinusoidal voltage injection in the estimated d-axis is also studied [20][21].…”
