Initial Vertical and Horizontal Position of Palatally Impacted Maxillary Canine and Effect on Periodontal Status Following Surgical-Orthodontic Treatment

Abstract: Objective:To evaluate the impact of surgical-orthodontic treatment and the initial vertical and mesiodistal position of palatally impacted maxillary canines on the periodontal health of impacted canines and adjacent teeth. Materials and Methods:The study group consisted of 32 patients with unilateral palatally impacted maxillary canines. The initial position of the impacted canines was assessed on panoramic images. The treatment protocol of the impacted canines included surgical exposure with the closed-erupti… Show more

“…Of the few other studies that have recorded recession very little difference between the operated and unoperated canines has been reported. 15,16 In a retrospective analysis by Zasciurinskiene and colleagues 20 consisting of 32 patients who underwent surgical exposure using the Closed technique, six patients (18.8%) were found to have gingival recession, although the mean values were small and it was not clear at which site the recession was present, nor was the range of the recession quantified. The largest mean value was at the palatal aspect of the canine (0.16mm, SD 0.22), which was not significantly different to the unoperated contra-lateral canines.…”

“…The augmented depth of palatine probing is a parameter that has been previously reflected in the literature dealing with the present topic (22). The fact that mucogingival surgery of the impacted canine on the vestibular side does not include exposure on the palatine side might induce an increase in the amount of free gingiva once the tooth is located in the arch, causing an increase in probing values, however, not affecting the insertion of the periodontal supracrestal fibers.…”

“…La exposición quirúrgica y la extrusión ortodóncica de caninos maxilares impactados consiguen condiciones periodontales clínicamente aceptables; sin embargo, este resultado dependía de la posición vertical y horizontal del canino impactado (Zasciurinskiene et al, 2008).…”
