Airports operate in a highly-competitive and challenging environment. Therefore, in order to remain competitive, innovation is imperative for airports. This paper aims to conduct academic research into innovation at airports by reviewing studies published from 2000 to 2019 for presenting key findings. A systematic literature review was made based on scientific papers indexed in Scopus with the keywords innovation and airport in the title, abstract or keywords sections, consolidating the innovation focus, approach and degree discussed with respect to innovation areas and territorial focal points. Consequently, it was found that research on airport innovation is: (i) mainly focused on products/services, (ii) concerned with leveraging ICT (Informatıon Communication Technology), (iii) implemented ad-hoc without a consolidated strategic approach, and (iv) lacks the input of external innovation scholars and specialists.

AbstractDuring the recent decade a lot of research has been focused on identification of the importance of regional airport for the local economy and the measuring and predicting of the airport’s efficiency. With regard to individual airport planning it turns out that airports are not free in the optimization of infrastructure due the need to comply international aviation standards and recommended practices, one the one hand, and the tendency of air transportation system development including aircraft design and airlines’ fleet development, on the other. Furthermore, it is also important to take into account the specificity of each particular airport, including the traffic variability resulting from seasonality, with the airport’s mission geared to it. We found, tha t one of the reasons for the relatively low efficiency of regional airports, given the general trend in the growth in the number of seats for narrow-body aircraft. Likewise, it has been found, that the seasonality of air traffic at regional airports is comparatively high. In addition, this paper spotlights the ways the theoretical model of returns to scale affects the efficiency of the apron of the regional airport and briefly discusses the different interpretations of the definition of regional airport.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of knowledge management processes on service innovation in international airports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Approach: The study applied a quantitative method to collect data via a questionnaire. A total number of 1493 questionnaires were distributed by two methods: 785 were paper copies and 708 online google forms. Out of 708 electronic questionnaires, only 85 were returned, while out of 785 paper-based questionnaires, 230 were collected. Results: The results showed that knowledge management processes (creating, sharing, and application) have a positive and significant impact on service innovation. Also, results showed that knowledge management processes (creating, sharing, and application) have a positive and significant impact on organizational creativity. Furthermore, organizational creativity acts partly as a mediator between knowledge management creation and service innovation. The results support the main role of knowledge management processes as a catalyst of knowledge-based innovation in Saudi international airports. Recommendations: Finally, the research recommends conducting such a study on airports in other countries in the GCC. Moreover, the study recommends building the capacity of human capital and to motivate employees to enhance organizational creativity in the airport sector. Originality: Developing and testing a new model that links knowledge management processes and organizational creativity with services in the GCC context.
