Inorganic nanotubes and fullerene-like nanoparticles

Abstract: We have proposed in 1992 that nanoparticles of layered compounds will be unstable against folding and close into fullerene-like structures and nanotubes (IF). Nanotubes and fullerene-like structures were prepared from numerous compounds with layered and recently also non-layered structure by various groups. Much progress has been achieved in the synthesis of inorganic nanotubes and fullerene-like nanoparticles of WS 2 and MoS 2 and many other metal dichalcogenides over the last few years. Substantial progress … Show more

“…3 Numerous other materials of the form MX 2 have shown stability in tubular form. [5][6][7][8][9] Many applications for inorganic nanotubes have been discovered. WS 2 nanotubes have proven to be effective solid lubricants, 22 display shock-wave resistance 23 and have been used as tips in scanning probe microscopy.…”

“…The use of MoS 2 layered material as an additive to oil is well known, and inorganic fullerenes of WS 2 have been shown to possess excellent lubrication properties outperforming their conventional layered counterparts (MoS 2 and WS 2 crystalline platelets) [4]. So, similar properties have been expected for nanowires.…”

“…WS 2 nanotubes (NT-WS 2 ) are the analogues of multiwalled CNT and represent folded and nested S-W-S sheets containing six-fold-bonded W atoms sandwiched between three-fold-bonded sulfur atoms [17]. Mass production of NT-WS 2 is based on reduction of WO 3 nanoparticles using a H 2 S/H 2 /N 2 gaseous mixture in fluidizedbed reactors [18].…”
