Instrument concept of the imaging Fourier transform spectrometer GLORIA

Abstract: Abstract. The Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere (GLORIA) is an imaging limb emission sounder operating in the thermal infrared region. It is designed to provide measurements of the Upper Troposphere/Lower Stratosphere with high spatial and high spectral resolution. The instrument consists of an imaging Fourier transform spectrometer integrated in a gimbal. The assembly can be mounted in the belly pod of the German high altitude and long range research aircraft HALO and in instrumen… Show more

“…Here, due to the particular flight strategy imposed by the remote‐sensing instruments Gimbaled Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere (GLORIA, see e.g., Friedl‐Vallon et al. (2014), Riese et al. (2014)) and ALIMA (Airborne Lidar for Middle Atmosphere research, see Rapp et al.…”

“…It is a remote sensing instrument, especially designed to measure vertical profiles of trace gases like water vapor with high accuracy and with a high spatial resolution in the UTLS. Details about GLORIA are discussed by Friedl‐Vallon et al () and Riese et al (). For the comparison in this study, the cloud index (Spang et al, ) and retrievals of water vapor (H 2 O ) and temperature based on “chemistry” mode measurements are used.…”

“…The Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere (GLORIA; Friedl-Vallon et al, 2014) is a cooled Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer which has been designed to fly on board the German research aircraft HALO (Krautstrunk and Giez, 2012) or the Russian M55 Geophysica (Myasichev Design Bureau (MDB), 2002). It measures the infrared emission of atmospheric species in the spectral range from 780 to 1400 cm −1 .…”
