Integration of ethnoscience in problem-based learning to improve contextuality and meaning of biology learning

Abstract: Meaningful learning can be carried out by adapting learning to local culture and traditions. Ethnoscience is a set of knowledge identified in a community and can be used as the learning base to create contextual and meaningful learning for students. This study aims to find more information about ethnoscience-based biology learning. The research method used was a literature study. The literature used mainly discusses ethnoscience, ethnoscience learning, and learning methods.   The instrument used in this study … Show more

“…These learning experiences can be in the form of opportunities to express opinions orally or in writing as well as observing phenomena that challenge scientific thinking skills. The learning using the PBL model with an ethnoscience approach can improve students' critical thinking skills in reproductive system material (Temuningsih, 2017;Suciyanti, 2021;Damayanti et al, 2017;Dewi et al, 2021). Ethnosciencebased PBL learning models are very effectively applied during the learning process because they can improve student learning outcomes.…”

“…According to (Çimer, 2012), some recommended strategies in teaching biology are reducing the content of the biology curriculum and connecting topics with everyday life (Etobro & Fabinu, 2017), to make it enjoyable. Integrating the silat movement in the motion system material is an effort to connect biology material with students' daily lives (Suciyati et al, 2021). Students are expected to be able to relate the biological content of the motion system with their culture and day-to-day activities.…”

“…In problembased learning, ethnoscience learning can be integrated through various steps such as: 1) determining the relationship between the material to be studied and the background of ethnoscience, 2) determining the real problems to be analyzed using ethnoscience, 3) determining the stages of ethnoscience to be included in the PBL syntax, 4) conservation of ethnoscience from original science knowledge to scientific science, and 5) determining the moral message in ethnoscience to be studied so that learning is more meaningful. PjBL ethnoscience integration can train students to deepen knowledge, apply scientific concepts, connect independent knowledge with scientific knowledge; and increase scientific concepts (Rumansyah, Leny, & Sofia, 2023;Suciyati et al, 2021).…”
