Intense heavy ion beam production from IMP LECR3 and construction progress of a superconducting ECR ion source SECRAL

Abstract: Intense heavy ion beams have been produced from IMP 14.5 GHz LECR3 by optimization of the ion source conditions and transmission efficiency. Highly charged stable beams, such as 325 eA of Ar 11ϩ , 95 eA of Xe 26ϩ , 7 eA of Xe 30ϩ , 140 eA of Fe 13ϩ , and 75 eA of Ni 12ϩ , were obtained by 14.5 GHz rf power 800-1000 W. Furthermore, an advanced superconducting ECR ion source named SECRAL is being constructed. SECRAL is designed to operate at rf frequency 18 -28 GHz with axial mirror magnetic fields 4.0 T at inje… Show more

“…Using coolant ZXB-21, which is developed by evaporative cooling technology laboratory, Institute of Electrical Engineering, the testing current has achieved up to 300 A, which is equivalent to a current density of 12.05 A/mm 2 , slightly higher than that of LECR3, another room temperature ECR ion source using normal hollow copper conductor with high-pressure de-ionized water cooling at IMP. 9 The maximum temperature on solid copper coils is 77 • C after 3 h of continuous operation. This maximum temperature is about 43% of its temperature limit (180 • Cdepending on the conducting insulation grade).…”

“…39 In Europe, the facilities under construction use the same ion sources, SUPERNANOGUN, commercially delivered by Pantechnik S.A. of Caen, France. It has a rectangular waveguide directly inserted into the chamber and cooling systems for the plasma chamber, the plasma electrode, the biased electrode, and the waveguide.…”
