Intent-aware search result diversification

Abstract: Search result diversification has gained momentum as a way to tackle ambiguous queries. An effective approach to this problem is to explicitly model the possible aspects underlying a query, in order to maximise the estimated relevance of the retrieved documents with respect to the different aspects. However, such aspects themselves may represent information needs with rather distinct intents (e.g., informational or navigational). Hence, a diverse ranking could benefit from applying intent-aware retrieval model… Show more

“…We use existing measures MAP-IA@n [1,3], MRR-IA@n [1,3] and NDCG-IA@n [3,18] to evaluate different aspects of our ranking algorithms. We review these measures below.…”

“…This measure was used in different works (e.g., [3,18]) and it is an adaptation of the NDCG (normalized discounted cumulative gain [10]) for measuring the diversification of the search results produced by a search system. This adaptation takes the results retrieved for different categories (DCs) into consideration, making the measure capable of also measuring the effectiveness of diversification.…”

“…To accommodate such different user needs (or user intents) given a query, research in search result diversification has received much attention recently (e.g., Refs. [1], [10], [14], [15], [27]). TREC (Text Retrieval Conference) * 1 began a diversity task in the Web track in 2009 [6] * 2 , and NTCIR (NII Testbeds and Community for Information access Research) * 3 concluded its first INTENT task for mining intents and selectively diversifying search results in 2011 [29] * 4 .…”
