Interaction design patterns for computers in sociable use

Abstract: This article contributes to a growing body of design patterns in interaction design for cooperative work, while also describing how to go from field studies to design patterns. It focuses sociable face-to-face situations. The patterns are based on field studies and design work in three sociable settings where desirable use qualities were identified and translated into forces in three design patterns for controlling information visibility. Based on the patterns, the design of a multiple-device multimedia platfo… Show more

“…Later on, the notion of design patterns has drawn the attention other communities and various design pattern collections have been created [16,34,51,52], such as in the fields of Hypermedia and Web Engineering [44,67], Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) [14,30,74,80] Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) [10,72,73] and e-learning [36,45,47,58]. A set of digital online catalogues for design patterns have been appeared, including the Hypermedia Design Patterns Repository [50], the BDesign patterns for Web, GUI and Mobile Interfaces^by M. van Welie [81], design patterns for game interfaces and social applications called BEricksons Interaction Design Patterns^ [37], the 90 web design patterns by K. Van Duyne [38], the B30 user interface patterns^by J. Tidwell (including a range of various real-life examples from desktop applications to websites and web applications for mobile devices [78]), and the Pattern Language for CSCW in [60].…”

“…Still, they also acknowledge that a natural language specification is necessary and useful for pattern documentation and communication: defining patterns using a formal approach, and understanding them, require expert knowledge of the used underlying formalism, which is rarely found in the average software engineer. As a matter of fact, most existing patterns languages [10,14,16,30,34,44,51,52,67,[72][73][74]80] adopt informal, natural language formulations only; in most cases the pattern structure includes a subset of the components of Alexander's template comprising Name, Problem, Usage, Solution, and Examples. We will use this style and simplified formulations to describe the patterns reported in the rest of the paper.…”

“…Specific patterns for privacy and sharing provide solutions to problems concerning the quality of use of cooperative systems [4]. They result from field studies, notes, and design sketches that were translated into three patterns: The 'workspace with privacy gradient', the 'combination of personal and shared devices', and the 'drop connector'.…”

“…With the increasing interest of software design patterns in industry and academia, this concept has received an increasing attention of fields outside traditional software engineering, such as Hypermedia and Web Engineering [43,72], Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) [14,28,77,86], Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) [5,76,78] and e-learning [41,42,44].…”

“…Rationale The concept of "overarching goal" in a 3DSS experience is directly analogous to the concept of a "mission" for a social structure (being it an institution, a company, or a large organization) which describes what is unique and special about that structure, what it stands for, what people involved with it (e.g., employees) could focus on, should strive for, and use as a guideline 5 . An overarching goal has several important effects.…”
