Previous studies suggested that sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical central‐eastern Pacific (TCEP) and tropical Northern Atlantic (TNA) both have significant impacts on the inter‐annual variation of precipitation over the monsoon transitional zone (MTZ) in China during August–September. This study further reveals that the relationship between TCEP (TNA) SST and MTZ precipitation during August–September is strongly modulated by the sign of the TNA (TCEP) SST. When TCEP and TNA SST anomalies have the same sign, connections of the TCEP and TNA SST with the MTZ precipitation are unclear. In contrast, TCEP and TNA SST changes both have significant relation with the MTZ precipitation when they have the opposite sign. During the same‐sign years, the anticyclonic (cyclonic) anomaly over the western North Pacific generated by the TCEP SST cooling (warming) is weakened by the cyclonic (anticyclonic) anomaly triggered by the TNA SST cooling (warming). Thus, connections of the MTZ precipitation with the TCEP and TNA SST are weak. However, during the opposite‐sign years, the anticyclonic anomalies over the western North Pacific generated by the TCEP SST anomalies have a constructive superposition on those induced by the TNA SST changes. As such, connections of the TCEP and TNA SST with the MTZ precipitation variation are significant. Further analysis shows that the prediction skill of precipitation over the MTZ is enhanced if taking both the TCEP and TNA SST signals into account.

Coherent Interannual Variations of Springtime Surface Temperature and Temperature Extremes Between Central‐Northern Europe and Northeast Asia

This study reveals a strong coherent interannual variation in spring surface air temperature (SAT) and temperature extremes between central‐northern Europe (45–70°N, 0–30°E) and Northeast Asia (40–70°N, 110–140°E). The regional mean spring SAT over the two regions is highly correlated, with a correlation of 0.6 during 1950–2017. Arctic Oscillation (AO) and an atmospheric teleconnection, termed the North Atlantic‐Eurasian (NAE) pattern, both play important roles in connecting SAT anomalies over the two regions. Anticyclonic anomalies are seen over central‐northern Europe and Northeast Asia during positive phases of the spring AO and NAE teleconnections. The associated southerly and westerly wind anomalies to the northwestern side of the anomalous anticyclones lead to surface warming over the two regions via anomalous wind‐induced heat advection from lower latitudes. In addition, a decrease in cloud cover and an accompanying increase in surface downward shortwave radiation also contribute to the coherent SAT warming over central‐northern Europe and Northeast Asia. We suggest that synoptic‐scale eddies forcings are crucial to the maintenance of the spring NAE teleconnection. Atmospheric model experiments indicate that the North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies also partly contribute to the maintenance of the NAE‐related atmospheric anomalies over the North Atlantic and European regions. The observed coherent spring SAT variations over central‐northern Europe and Northeast Asia and their associations with the AO and midlatitude atmospheric teleconnections can be reproduced in the long historical simulation of a coupled model. This study has implication for the understanding of concurrent occurrence of extreme temperature events over different regions of Eurasia.

Previous studies have revealed that the relationship between the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is not statistically significant when the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is in its positive phase. This study explores a possible way to obtain a robust ENSO-EAWM relationship from a dynamical point of view. Here, the authors show that the East Asian winter temperature is significantly and continuously correlated with ENSO when the linear impact of the PDO has been linearly removed from ENSO. Such a conclusion is confirmed by different reanalysis datasets. The dynamical process intensifying the ENSO-EAWM is further investigated from the perspective of whether or not the atmospheric teleconnection between the Pacific and East Asia has established. Compared to the situation associated with the original ENSO in the positive phase of the PDO, the Walker circulation associated with the processed ENSO, from which the effect of North Pacific climate systems has been removed, tends to exert a more pronounced influence on the atmospheric circulation over the western North Pacific. Consequently, an anomalous anticyclone emerges in the Kuroshio extension. In this sense, the Pacific-East Asian teleconnection is also well established during the positive phase of the PDO, which favors the impact of ENSO on East Asian winter temperature.
