Interdependence as a Frame for Assistive Technology Research and Design

Abstract: In this paper, we describe interdependence for assistive technology design, a frame developed to complement the traditional focus on independence in the Assistive Technology field. Interdependence emphasizes collaborative access and people with disabilities' important and often understated contribution in these efforts. We lay the foundation of this frame with literature from the academic discipline of Disability Studies and popular media contributed by contemporary disability justice activists. Then, drawing … Show more

“…Inclusive design, as complementary to participatory design, places emphasis on empowering as many people as possible, often with a focus on removing barriers for people who have physical or cognitive disabilities [32]. Inclusive approaches may involve consideration of the interdependence between researchers and stakeholders (i.e., collapsing the distinction between who is doing the research, and for whom that research is being done) [7,8]. Who are the stakeholders in a research project?…”

“…Instead, they intend to facilitate interdependencies among students by inviting connections and to maintain all participants as learners and contributors [3]. As such, they emphasize the participation of all students while attempting to uplift those with disabilities who have been traditionally marginalized [4].…”

“…For example, visually impaired paddlers typically must either rely on a multi-person canoe or respond to simple audible directives (e.g., left, right, watch out) called out from a support boat-neither of which match the training conditions of sighted paddlers. In addressing these challenges, we take the interdependent approach to assistive technology design [10], with an eye towards the ways that working together on both the design and the experience of such technology could drive additional awareness and engagement across the boundaries of the sighted and blind paddler communities.…”
