Interference Effects Redress over Power-Efficient Wireless-Friendly Mesh Networks for Ubiquitous Sensor Communications across Smart Cities

Abstract: Ubiquitous sensing allows smart cities to take control of many parameters (e.g., road traffic, air or noise pollution levels, etc.). An inexpensive Wireless Mesh Network can be used as an efficient way to transport sensed data. When that mesh is autonomously powered (e.g., solar powered), it constitutes an ideal portable network system which can be deployed when needed. Nevertheless, its power consumption must be restrained to extend its operational cycle and for preserving the environment. To this end, our st… Show more

“…Due to such a feature, WMNs are suitable for both providing ubiquitous connection to the internet and carrying data generated by multiple services, such as internet of things (IoT), smart grids, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), etc. [4][5][6], where mesh nodes need to be deployed without fixed power connections. In this case, most of the mesh nodes are supplied by the batteries, which have limited operation time and need to be replaced or recharged frequently.…”

“…Among those causes are the following: Coverage deficiencies in LTE (especially in emergent countries). Range coverage and radio channel interferences in WiFi [ 16 ], prolonged access to the channel (long periods of contention) of WiFi terminal. Bad planificafication of dense WiFi networks.…”

“…Nowadays, the trend is getting stronger and stronger that gathered data growth and deployed ubiquitous sensing application systems [1,2,3,4,5] are highly interrelated and mutually improved. The development of ubiquitous sensing, including wireless sensor networks and their applications, speeds up the production of data [6,7,8,9,10].…”
