“…Decreasing the overall tricalcium aluminate content, which reacts with water and sulfate to form ettringite, can result in improved resistance to sulfate attack. Several studies have shown that a lower tricalcium aluminate content can lead to improved resistance (Monteiro and Kurtis, 2003;Ouyang et al, 1998;Verbeck, 1967). The impact of reducing the tricalcium aluminate content is widely recognised and sulfate-resisting cements have been subsequently devised (Type V from ASTM C150/C150M-12 (ASTM, 2012) and the CEM I-SR series from BS EN 197-1:2011(BSI, 2011).…”

“…The iron-and aluminium-containing hydrates of Portland cement dissolve slower and at lower pH values than calcium hydrates (Beddoe and Dorner, 2005), so the addition of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to Portland cement has been tested and shown to improve the cement's acid resistance by lowering the calcium content and decreasing porosity (Al-Akhras, 2006;Bakharev 2005;Bakharev et al, 2002;Lee et al, 2005;Ouyang et al, 1988). In the case of attack by sulfate ions, SCMs also help to preserve matrix integrity since they do not form expanding reaction products.…”

“…When pozzolanic materials are combined with PC, the normal Portland cement hydration reaction takes place but other chemical reactions also occur. The pozzolanic reaction, reactive siliceous and aluminous phases react with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 emissions in cement production, as the amount of Portland cement can be reduced in the concrete [6]. The replacement of PC with pozzolanic materials reduces the overall CO 2 footprint of the material.…”
