“…In previous reports on 198 Au brachytherapy for tongue cancer, the two-year CSS rate was 73%, the three-year CSS rate was 73% with T1 and T2, and the five-year CSS rates were 71% and 75% for patients with oral cancer [ 2 , 5 , 19 ]. The three-year OS rate was 57%, and the five-year OS rates were 51% and 52% for patients with oral cancer [ 2 , 5 ].…”

“…Due to the short half-life, the source allows permanent implantations and no removal, resulting in reduced risk of anesthesia and accompanied pain. The radiation exposure of this method of implantation is relatively low and acceptable for treatment staff (14 Á/16), although rotation of treating personnel is recommended to minimize radiation exposure to individuals (14). Despite these advantages, use of gold seed brachytherapy has been limited to areas in the oral cavity and selected patients with oral carcinomas.…”

“…Patients with carcinoma of the tongue constituted only 13% (6/45) (16) and 18.6% (33/177) (15) of all patients who underwent gold seed implantation in previous studies. Although a technique was reported for a volume implantation (14), gold seeds were usually used with single plane implantation and were suggested to be a contraindication for deeply invasive carcinomas. This would probably be due to the technical problems involved with implantation and the subsequent occurrence of inadequate dose distributions.…”
