Intestinal cestodes

Abstract: Human intestinal cestode infections are globally primarily caused by species in three genera: Taenia, Hymenolepis or Diphyllobothrium. Sporadic zoonotic infections caused by nontaeniids are usually food-borne or due to accidental ingestion of invertebrate hosts. Intestinal cestode infections generally result in only mild symptoms characterized chiefly by abdominal discomfort and diarrhoea. Most human intestinal cestode infections can be treated with a single oral dose of praziquantel or niclosamide.

“…Two helminths recorded here are of medical and veterinary importance. H. diminuta can cause sporadic zoonotic infections in human following accidental ingestion of invertebrate intermediate hosts (Tena et al 1998, Marangi et al 2003, Craig and Ito 2007, and T. taeniaeformis is a cestode parasite of cats.…”

“…Although the pathology of intestinal cestodes is usually minor, if metacestode stages occur in human tissues, pathology and morbidity can be severe. Several species are known to infect humans, with Taenia solium (pork tapeworm), which can cause neurocysticercosis when metacestode stages develop in the brain after infection with eggs; Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm); Hymenolepis nana (dwarf tapeworm); and Diphyllobothrium latum (broad or fish tapeworm) being the most common (399).…”
