“…Mid-and hindbrain structures supporting robust selfstimulation included the ventral tegmental area, substantia nigra, retrorubral fields, central grey and dorsal raphe, dorsal tegmentum, including particularly the lateral dorsal tegmentum, the pedunculopontine tegmentum, the locus coeruleus and neighboring mesencephalic root of the trigeminal nerve, the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve, parabrachial nucleus, and select areas of the cerebellum (Ball et al, 1974;Crow et al, 1972;Huang and Routtenberg, 1971;Liebman et al, 1973;Ritter and Stein, 1974;Routtenberg and Malsbury, 1969;Simon et al, 1975;Steiner et al, 1978;van der Kooy and Phillips, 1979). Several of these investigations also revealed robust self-stimulation in or very near to the ventral tegmental decussation and anterior decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncle (Routtenberg and Malsbury, 1969;Liebman et al, 1973;Ritter and Stein, 1974) suggesting the possibility of interhemispheric connections in brain reward circuitry.…”
