Introduction to the Internet of Things

Abstract: The expression "Internet of Things" (IoT), coined back in 1999 by Kevin Ashton, the British technology pioneer who cofounded the Auto-ID Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is becoming more and more mainstream. In opening the IoT Week 2013 1 with a pre-recorded video message, 2 Ashton insisted on the realization that IoT is here now; it is not the future but the present. While Gartner identifies IoT as one of the top ten strategic technology trends, 3 Cisco forecasts 50 billion devices connect… Show more

“…CPS are more and more interconnected through the IoT [3], which encompasses the extension of the Internet into the physical realm, resulting in a global network that interconnects thousands or even millions of "things", or smart objects [10]. Therefore, CPS and IoT are connected terms: CPS is a broader, more foundational and durable term because it is not limited to any particular implementation (such as the Internet) [2].…”

“…Embedded computers monitor and control physical processes in real time or quasi real time, usually with feedback loops, where physical processes affect computations and vice versa [2]. The consolidation of CPS, partly promoted by the boom in the Internet of Things (IoT) [3], 1 big data, and the development of wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSAN), is generating new business models in a broad range of domains, including healthcare.…”

“…The concept of the IoT, initially coined by Kevin Ashton in 1999, has now projected to be a 1.6 trillion market in 2025 ( Kramp et al, 2013 ). IoT is a smart network of connected physical objects with embedded sensors and actuators.…”

“…besides embedded systems and cloud‐based services in the future [1]. By 2020, 50 billion IoT devices are forecasted in [2] which nowadays mostly include primary or secondary battery powered WSN that should endure up to 10 years [3]. With respect to the predicted high number of WSNs in I4.0 plants – the so‐called third wave of microelectromechanical systems after automotive and consumer electronics – total costs of ownership will rise mainly because of recharging or replacing WSN's batteries.…”
