Abstract. The article deals with some aspects of visualisation as the tool of education process quality increasing at technical universities. There is described the sequence of 3D modelling activities that students have to pass in order to be successful in the study and consequently in practice. First, they learn to create simple parts, then they learn to assemble the components into the static or welded assemblies, respectively into movable mechanism. In higher levels, if they absorb the fundamental theoretical knowledge, they can subject the 3D models to the analysis, as are stress, kinematic, dynamic analysis, etc. and compare the computer aided results with the values calculated in classical way. Students can apply the other advantages of the virtual models into the drawings preparation in electronic form and at the tool path verification during the machining simulation. The whole production process can be designed by students, too. They can use several CAD/CAM systems for all activities listed above and compare results to verify the solution.

The paper deals with the bending tests of new designed joints for bus skeletons. The frames of buses have to satisfy various demands, but the safety of the passengers is the priority. The actual welded joints should be replaced by new type of profiles connections in the future. Finite elements method was used for the bending test simulation and for the stress investigation; the real experiments were done using the universal test equipment ZD10/90. Obtained results are comparable, so authors aim to realize next experiments in next days at which other shapes of the joints will be tested.

Truss structures are part not only technical practice but also our everyday life. It is very important to be designed safely. One of the tools that help a designer to avoid errors and to make the right decisions about a structure material, beam profile, shape of rod construction, etc. is virtual analysis. The article deals with the preliminary study of tower crane, which can be considered as the truss structure. Various types of structures are described in the introduction. The main part of the article is devoted to static analysis of the crane. The physical 3D model was prepared in reduced scale according to standards of European model trains NEM (Normen Europäischer Modellbahnen). Axial forces, stresses in beams, as well as the maximum possible load have been specified by analytical method. The strain analysis of crane has shown that the primary design of the structure was not acceptable and the construction would not be able to lift up required weight. Results were verified by virtual simulation in software Robot Structural Analysis. Therefore, the truss was reinforced by additional bars and newly remodelled tower crane has been tested to specify the maximum load of external weight.
