Patterning limnological characteristics of the Chilika lagoon (India) using a self-organizing map

In this study, a self-organizing map (SOM) was utilized to classify habitats in the Chilika lagoon located in India, the largest lagoon ecosystem in Asia (maximum length, 64.3 km; mean width, 20.1 km). The lagoon was marginally eutrophic (nitrate, 0.25 ± 0.22 mg L -1 ; orthophosphate, 0.26 ± 0.22 mg L -1 ; n = 1,980, respectively) for six years (1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004), and it used to be warm, shallow, turbid and predominantly brackish. The SOM model successfully identified the changing patterns of limnology in the lagoon using the monthly limnological dataset from 30 study sites (July 1999-December 2004. Comparative re-sectoring evaluation of current monitoring sites was accomplished based on the outcome of the modeling. The new site clustering that emerged from the model was similar to conventional ones, and several sites were reorganized. Water physicochemistry was affected by freshwater inflow during monsoon and the new lagoon mouth constructed in September 2000, which resulted in variations in site characteristics in terms of limnology. The results of this study may provide information on the limnological patterns in Chilika lagoon, and they leave room for further study into functional changes in the lagoon ecology with respect to changes in climatic factor, freshwater flow and lagoon morphology.

ResumoLevantamentos florísticos são ferramentas importantes para o conhecimento da diversidade e distribuição das espécies. Pouco se conhece sobre a diversidade de macrófitas aquáti-cas de áreas úmidas palustres do Parque Nacional da Lagoa do Peixe. O objetivo desse trabalho foi realizar um levantamento de macrófitas aquáticas em áreas úmidas do parque. Foram identificadas 176 espécies de macrófitas aquáticas, distribuídas em 98 gêneros e 44 famílias. As famílias com maior número de espécies foram Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Juncaceae e Asteraceae. Os gêneros mais diversos foram Eleocharis (14 espécies), Juncus (10 espécies), Cyperus (7 espécies), Utricularia (7 espécies), Rhynchospora (6 espécies) e Ludwigia (6 espécies). As espécies mais frequentes foram: Hydrocotyle bonariensis, Centella asiatica, Ischaemum minus, Nymphoides indica. As formas biológicas predominantes foram anfíbias (45% das espécies) e emergentes (28% das espécies). As macrófitas flutuantes representaram 16% das espécies e as macrófitas submersas representaram 11%. A diversidade das áreas úmidas palustres é alta e comparável a outras extensas áreas úmidas do Brasil, tais como o Pantanal e o Taim. A informação contida nesse estudo vem no sentido de complementar o conhecimento sobre a diversidade biológica do parque.Palavras-chave: Lagoa do Peixe, levantamento florístico, plantas aquáticas, tipos biológicos. AbstractFloristic surveys are significant tools to get to know species diversity and distribution. Little is known about the diversity of aquatic macrophytes in the palustrine wetlands of the Lagoa do Peixe National Park. The goal of this study was to survey aquatic macrophytes in the park wetlands. It identified 176 aquatic macrophyte species distributed in 98 genera and 44 families. Families with the largest number of species included Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Juncaceae, and Asteraceae. The most diverse genera were Eleocharis (14 species), Juncus (10 species), Cyperus (7 species), Utricularia (7 species), Rhynchospora (6 species), and Ludwigia (6 species). The predominant biological forms were amphibious (45% of the species) and emergent (28% of the species) macrophytes. The diversity of the palustrine wetlands is high and comparable to other extensive wetlands in Brazil, such as Pantanal and Taim. The information in this study is important to improve the knowledge about the biological diversity of the National Park.

An Experiment in Participative Environmental Decision Making

The paper presents a method of participatory decision-making involving the authorities at local level, experts and the public. It studies how to solve the problems caused by the heterogeneity of the parties taking part in the decision-making process. The method builds on mutual learning and consideration among the participants following a systematic approach led by a moderator. The method was tested at a workshop simulating a real-life situation. The test case studied at the workshop was the problem of identifying the best site for a low and intermediate level radioactive waste repository among three alternatives. The learning phase was the Krško Nuclear Power Plant cooling problem. The results show that the participants were able to reach agreement on the prioritisation of the alternatives and to end up with suprisingly complex and fully reasonable decision models. We believe that this was achieved particularly due to the well defined procedure that guided the decision-making process, and the ability of all participants to see the influence of their views on the decision model.
