Investigating the Use of Layered Double Hydroxide Nanoparticles as Carriers of Metal Oxides for Theranostics of ROS-Related Diseases

Abstract: Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is commonly known as a key factor in the progression of many chronic inflammation diseases such as atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, a metal oxide nanodot coated-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposite is constructed for theranostics of ROS-related diseases. This is the first time that both cerium oxide and iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) were attached on the surface of LDH NPs through electrostatic interaction via the nanoengineering a… Show more

“…According to our results, this nanoparticle can be considered as a potential theranostic material for ROS-related inflammatory diseases. In addition, we also synthesised CeO2-Fe3O4@LDH nanocomposites [32]. The rationale of these nanocomposites is similar to the above nanoparticles.…”

“…In addition, their anion exchange capability, pH responsivity, and cell-penetrability along with endosomal escape are also noticeable. 68,86,87 For example, Li et al used a nanodot-coating technique to make (10-15 nm) sized SiO 2 dot-coatings on the LDH (110 nm) to nally achieve 170 nm sized (SiO 2 @MgAl-LDH) nanohybrids. The as-made nanohybrids were well-dispersible with an optimum size range for drug-delivery applications 88 (Fig.…”

“…It also attenuated the OXA-induced changes in some key markers [e.g., myelination (MBP), oxidative stress (nitrotyrosine), and astrocyte glial cell activation (glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)] and enzymatic activity (SOD and GPx) ( Abdelhamid et al, 2020 ). Some CeO 2 -based therapeutic agents [e.g., CeO 2 -decorated MSNs ( Wu H. et al, 2018 ), CeO 2 -integrated microneedle patches ( Yuan et al, 2021 )] and theragnostic agents (e.g., Fe 3 O 4 /CeO 2 core–shell NPs) ( Wu Y. et al, 2018 ), Fe 3 O 4 /CeO 2 -coated layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposites ( Liu et al, 2019 ), and Fe 3 O 4 /CeO 2 chitosan nanococktails ( Wu et al, 2021 )] have been developed to scavenge ROS for the treatment and/or diagnosis of ROS-related inflammatory diseases. Moreover, Gao et al synthesized basalin-coated silver (Ag) NPs in aqueous medium using silver nitrate, which alleviated neuropathic pain of OXA-treated mice by decreasing the aluminum (Al) levels in the DRG via chelation ( Gao et al, 2017 ).…”
