Isolation and Structure Elucidation of a Novel Glycoside Niazidin from the Pods of Moringa oleifera

Abstract: Studies on the EtOH extract of fresh pods of Moringa oleifera have resulted in the isolation of a novel glycoside niazidin (1) possessing an O-nitrile thiocarbamate group, along with thiocarbamate, carbamate, and isothiocyanate glycosides. Their structures have been determined through spectral studies, including appropriate 2D NMR experiments and chemical reaction. Fatty acid esters, long-chain hydrocarbons, carbamic acid, isocyanates, isothiocyanates, phenolic esters, nitriles, nitrile ester (3), polysulfide… Show more

“…It is a prolific producer of diverse secondary metabolites including glycosides preferentially rhamnosides of carbamates, thiocarbamates, nitriles, benzyl glucosinolates, thiocyanates, isothiocyanates and oxazolidine-2-thiones. Pharmacological screening of its leaf extracts exhibited hypotensive [4], cardioprotective [5], hepatoprotective [6], antidiabetic [7] and antiulcerogenic activities [8]. The pods are hypotensive [9] while seeds showed antibacterial [10], antitumor [11], anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic activities [12].…”

“…The stem bark has also been reported to contain alkaloids (moringinine and moringine) . In particular, this plant genus contains unusual sugar‐substituted hydroxy‐aromatic glucosinolates . Generally, glucosinolates are structurally characterized by a β‐ d ‐glucopyranosyl unit and an O ‐sulfated anomeric ( Z )‐thiohydroximate function connected to a variable side chain depending on the amino acid metabolism of the plant species .…”

“…[8] In particular, this plant genus contains unusual sugar-substituted hydroxy-aromatic glucosinolates. [9,10] Generally, glucosinolates are structurally characterized by a β-D-glucopyranosyl unit and an O-sulfated anomeric (Z)-thiohydroximate function connected to a variable side chain depending on the amino acid metabolism of the plant species. [11] M. oleifera contains several uncommon members of the glucosinolates family with peculiar characteristics given by the presence in their structure of a second saccharide residue in the aglycon side chain.…”
