Isotype distribution of anti-Ro/SS-A and anti-La/SS-B antibodies in plasma and saliva of patients with Sjögren's syndrome

Abstract: In this study an ELISA assay was used to quantify the levels of antibodies against the recombinant Ro 52 kD, Ro 60 kD, and La 48 kD proteins in plasma and saliva of 17 Sjo È gren's syndrome patients. The levels of total IgG, IgA, and IgM were also quanti®ed. About one third of the patients had salivary enrichment of IgA and IgM against the Ro 52 kD, Ro 60 kD, and La 48 kD antigens and IgG against La 48 kD, while no enrichment of IgG against Ro 52 kD and Ro 60 kD was found. Most correlations between plasma and … Show more

“…Immunoglobulins, including IgA, IgG, and IgM, account for 5–15% of total salivary proteins [ 16 , 17 ]. However, variable salivary concentrations have been reported for each isotype [ 23 , 31 33 ]. Although IgG is the dominant immunoglobulin in serum, IgA comprises > 85% of salivary immunoglobulins [ 16 , 17 ].…”

“…3 4 The presence of autoantibodies in serum targeting the Ro/SSA and La/SSB antigens demarks a patient subset with distinct major histocompatibility complex genotypes, whereas genetic features in patients with pSS without these autoantibodies have not been demonstrated to significantly differ from that of controls. [5][6][7][8] Treatment of pSS is mainly symptomatic since evidence-based treatment with a significant impact on the disease course is currently lacking. 3 Also, knowledge on factors suitable for preventive measures is insufficient.…”

“…However, the distribution of IgG antibodies against exocrine glands M 3 and M 1 mAChRs was found to correlate well with SS disease activity (Bacman et al, 1996(Bacman et al, , 1998(Bacman et al, , 2001Perez Leiros et al, 2002). Moreover, the titer of antibodies of IgA subclass also correlated with SS disease activity (Anaya and Talal, 1997;Halse et al, 2000). Berra et al (2002) demonstrated high prevalence of saliva IgA with mAChR activity in SS patients.…”
