Job retention among older workers in central and Eastern Europe

Abstract: We study job retention ratesthe shares of workers who continue to work in the same job over the next five yearsin Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Job retention among older workers is key to prolonging careers and increasing employment of older people which in turn is a crucial challenge for these countries. We find that the retention rates among workers aged 55-59 are low and amount to about a half of the retention rates among prime aged workers. Only in Poland the retention rates of older workers have … Show more

“…The in-depth analysis of the reasons why, if one has the opportunity, one who is late-career employed would like to retire as soon as possible is of particular importance for both science and policy. In EU research and public policy, little space is devoted to research on determinants of retirement timing in crossnational perspective (Wojciech et al, 2018), especially on the individual motives and characteristics of late-career persons, a highly heterogeneous group of employees. The early retirement plans are made not just by people with low education, poor health, and low economic status.…”

“…Analiza przyczyn takich wartości wskaźników jest znana [np. Hardy et al 2018;Gal i Radó 2019], m.in. zwraca się uwagę na określone zasady systemów emerytalnych wspierające lub nie dłuższą aktywność zawodową, ustawowego wieku przejścia na emeryturę, a także innych czynników i uwarunkowań kulturowych dotyczących zatrudniania osób starszych.…”

“…Fadejeva and Opmane (2016) study data from the Latvian Labour Force Survey, and report lower hazard ratios of transitioning from unemployment to employment for older unemployed workers. Hardy et al (2016) use the European Labour Force Survey to examine the job retention rates of older and prime-age workers (i.e., the shares of workers who hold the same job over the next fi ve years) in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. The retention rates among older workers amount to just half the retention rates among prime-age workers, while the retention rates of older workers increased between 1998 and 2013 only in Poland.…”

“…There are only two cross-country econometric studies available to us (Tatsiramos, 2010;Hardy et al, 2016), addressing, from various viewpoints, the specific position of older workers. Most of the related literature typically concentrates on one selected country, where the focus on institutions, policies, and on various performance indicators can be more detailed than in a cross-country framework.…”
