The importance and relevance of biographical research of the Ukrainian press figures, due to which it is possible to retrieve numerous little-known or forgotten unique names of Ukrainian culture, have been revealed. The journalistic work of the doctor, public and cultural figure, editor, publisher and photographer Stephan Dmokhovsky in the 1920s and 1930s has been analyzed. His participation in the establishment and functioning of a number of Ukrainian press publications in Galicia during this period has been elucidated. The Dmokhovsky’s figure as an editor, publisher and journalist has not yet been the subject of a separate study and has been explored only in pieces. Biographical information about him has been supplemented, Dmokhovsky’s active participation in the social and political life of interwar Galicia has been illuminated. His significant contribution to the development of the Ukrainian sports and amateur movement upon the West Ukrainian lands has been highligh ted. Forty-six of Dmokhovsky’s articles in the Ukrainian press of Galicia in the interwar period have been introduced for scientific use. The typology of Dmokhovsky’s articles on the thematic basis has been accomplished. The most pressing topics for Dmokhovsky were the interwar socio-political life in Galicia, development and Ukrainian youth patriotic education, Ukrainian sports achievements, photography, local cultural life, efficient management and peasantry education. The reviewed publications attest to Dmokhovsky’s high erudition and brilliant journalistic skill. He was able to write in an accessible and witty way on professional economic and artistic topics, therefore these articles deserve attention of contemporary media press researchers and historians. The need for a separate thorough study of journalistic achievements of Dmokhovsky’s emigre period as well as scholarly study of his personal archive stored in the Ukrainian Museum-Archive in Cleveland have been accentuated. Keywords: Stephan Dmokhovsky, journalist, press, article, Galicia, Ukrainianness.

Till now, one segment of the history of Ukrainian print journalism of the 19th and 20th c. remains insufficiently researched. This is the Ukrainian press published in China in 1917–1944s. The people who participated in its creation and functioning are undeservedly forgotten, and their significant role in the evolution of this national social institution is underappreciated. That is why the figure of one of the active participants of Ukrainian national life in East Asia – Ivan Paslavskyi – was chosen as the object of our research. Particular attention is paid to the research of his cooperation with the Ukrainian press, which in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century published in Harbin. Information as to particular episodes of I. Paslavskyi’s life path is specified. An attempt is made to identifying those fragments of the biography that require further research. The author explores I. Paslavskyi’s participation in the founding, publishing, and editing of such periodicals as Dalekyi Skhid [Far East] (1925–1926), Mandzhurskyi Vistnyk [Manchurian Herald] (1932–1937), Ukrainske Zhyttia [Ukrainian Life] (1925), Ukrainski “Lysty z Dalekoho Skhodu” [Ukrainian “Letters from the Far East”] (1932). It is accented to his participation in the functioning of the page Ukrainskaia Zhizn [Ukrainian Life] (1929–1930) in the Russian language newspaper Gung-Bao. More than forty publications by I. Paslavskyi were found in those periodical presses and in the newspaper Dalekyi Skhid [Far East] (1938–1939). It is noted that he signed the publications in the press by his real name, pseudonyms I. P., Lev Halytskyi, L. Halytskyi or remained anonymous. This paper presents a review of the main problematic areas of his journalistic heritage. The emphasis is on the necessity to continue scientific research to clarify controversial fragments of I. Paslavskyi’s biography and his activities as a journalist. The prospects of scientific research devoted to the study of the Ukrainian press in China 1917–1944s and the persons who participated in its functioning are outlined. Keywords: Ivan Paslavskyi, Harbin, Ukrainian press, Dalekyi Skhid [Far East] (1925–1926), Dalekyi Skhid [Far East] (1938–1939), Mandzhurskyi Vistnyk [Manchurian Herald], page Ukrainskaia Zhizn [Ukrainian Life], Ukrainske Zhyttia [Ukrainian Life], Ukrainski «Lysty z Dalekoho Skhodu» [Ukrainian «Letters from the Far East»], journalistic and editorial activities.
The biographical facts and creative activity of translator Sofia Kulykivna and film manager and editor Sonia Kulykivna have been studied in detail on the basis of archival documents, biographical dictionaries, and articles in the press. The latest research and publications about Sofia (Sonia) Kulykivna have been elaborated. A comparative analysis of this information has been carried out and it’s been found that Sofia Kulykivna and Sonia Kulykivna have different dates and places of birth, parents’ names and marital status. The version that these are different personalities, who were mistakenly united by modern researchers into one figure, has been finally confirmed. Both general scientific methods (deduction, induction, analysis, synthesis) and special scientific methods (hypothetical-scientific, biographical, study of archival documents) have been used to carry out the research. The found texts (translations and publications) signed by Kulykivna have been analyzed and a clear trend has been witnessed: the translator always signed herself as Sofia Kulykivna, and the editor and film manager – as Sonia Kulykivna. The biography of Sofia Kulykivna (Kulyk-Mykytiyk) has been presented, her translation activity and cooperation with the Lviv press have been described. Biographical facts about Sonia Kulykivna have been highlighted, her photo was found, her journalistic and editorial-publishing activities have been disclosed, her pseudonyms have been given. It is noted that Sonia Kulykivna’s fate after 1935 is unknown and requires additional scientific research. It is summarized that archival documents and materials from family archives played a key role in verifying the version about the existence of two Kulykivna’s namesakes in the interwar space of Galicia. Both were realized in the media space of interwar Galicia, which caused confusion and the intertwining of their life and creative facts into a joint biography. It is emphasized that the unique creative path of each of them encourages its more thorough study. Keywords: Sonia Kulykivna, Sofia Kulykivna, biography, periodical, translation, cinema.
