Felling and skidding are essential in the timber extraction process. But on the other hand, residual stand damage can’t be avoided. This study aimed to analyze the impact of conventional and improved felling and skidding techniques on residual stands in natural forests. Three observation plots were developed to identify the types, numbers, and criteria of residual stand damage due to both techniques. The criteria were categorized as a) minor damage (<25%), b) moderate damage (25–50%), and c) major damage (>50%). It showed that the conventional felling and skidding technique caused damages of 14.92% dominated by tree crown damage and 16.70% dominated by stem wounds, respectively. The residual stand damage due to conventional felling and skidding technique was 31.62% categorized as medium damage. Meanwhile, improved felling and skidding techniques caused damage of 9.89% dominated by broken trees, and 10.27% dominated by stem wounds, respectively. The residual stand damage due to improved felling and skidding technique was 20.16% categorized as minor damage. The improvement techniques can minimize residual stand damage by 36.24%. Therefore, a good understanding of forest concessionaires regarding RIL principles is necessary for achieving sustainable timber harvesting

Over the last five years (2013−2017) there has been a deficit of ± 23.2 million m 3 year of wood raw materials, while the facts in the field of timber harvesting are still wasteful with leaving logging waste reaching an average of 17% of the annual production quota target of 9.1 million m 3 /year. The trial of zero waste-based and environmentally timber harvesting method (ZWL) is important to strengthen the tree length logging methods. This research aimed to obtain data and technical information related to the efficiency of wood utilization and the potential of timber logging waste. The trial results showed that zero waste and environmentally timber harvesting methods could improve wood utilization efficiency by 9%, from an average of 82.9% to an average of 91.9%, and reduce the potential for clear bole (BBC) logging waste from an average of 12% (0.863 m 3 / tree) to only 8.1% (0.418 m 3 /tree). In addition, it was able to save the potential of logging waste from stems above the branch (BAC) ranging from 2.8−11.2% with an average of 6.4% (0.418 m 3 /tree). However, ecologically it could not reduce damage to residual stands which reached 37.7% while conventional methods amounted to 38.8%. Potential logging waste both BBC and BAC were mostly defective (50.5−58.3%), and some were still good (14.4−26.3%) while those with broken conditions were still quite high (22.6-27.3%). Until now, the potency of timber harvesting waste has not been utilized due to the consideration of the high cost of Non-Tax Government Income (PNBP) levies, uncertainty in the application of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation Number: P.1/Menlhk/Setjen/Kum.1/1/2019, and the ZWL method has not been informed yet to minimize the cost of logging waste extraction. In order to reduce timber harvesting waste and residual stand damage, the forest management refresh logging and skidding techniques to improve the skills of the chainsaw and the tractor operators.

Forest destruction is increasing in various areas in Indonesia. If the countermeasure is not carried out, the forest destruction will get worse. One of the perpetrators of forest destruction is the community in the forest village (Desa Hutan), and the network is the capital owners and industrial businesses that require forest products. The countermeasure will hardly happen without community involvement. Based on the description, there are some problems as follows, how is the effectiveness of social involvement in overcoming the forest destruction problem through the use of land under the stand (tegakan); how to strive the social behavior to respond the utilization lands programs under the stand (tegakan). The method used in this research is the qualitative method. The research locations were Semirejo Village and Klakah Kasihan Village, Gembong Sub-District, Pati Regency. The results of this study indicate that based on Semirejo and Klakah Kasihan Village cases, it is known that the empowerment of the community through land use of stand(tegakan) can effectively support the countermeasures of forest destruction. The community and Indonesian Forest Company (Perhutani) provide mutual benefits. The community earns income from utilizing the land under the stands, Indonesian Forest Company (Perhutani) gets benefits that they no longer damage the forest, actively protect the forests in their area from the residents' disturbance of surrounding communities and other regions.
