“…Although previous studies on bats did not measure the percentage of renal medulla, they did measure such indices as RMT (Studier et al, 1983b;Bhati and Srivastava, 1994), the ratio of inner cortex to medulla (IC/M) (Geluso, 1978;Happold and Happold, 1988), and the thickness of the cortex and medulla (Carpenter, 1969). These studies demonstrate that species feeding on relatively concentrated diets have more renal medulla than species feeding on dilute diets.…”

“…For example, renal morphology has been previously examined in 26 bat species from Central America and Central Africa (Studier et al, 1983b), in 28 species from Central Africa (Happold and Happold, 1988), and in 19 species from Mexico Schondube et al, 2001). However, these studies only examined morphological indices from mid-sagittal kidney sections.…”

“…An inverse relationship between RMT and body weight has been shown for mammals of varying dietary habits and encompassing a wide range of body weights (Blake 1977;Lawler and Geluso 1986). However, Geluso (1978), Studier et al (1983) and Bassett (1986) found no allometric relationship for renal indices in insectivorous bats, but the range of body weight for the bats was small. In a review of this relationship for 165 mammals, Beuchat (1990) obtained the equation RMT=5.408W-0"0s, where W is body weight in kilograms and the 95% confidence interval of the slope is -0.126 to -0.090.…”

“…The RMA was very low at 0.30 and the predicted maximum urinary concentration based on the equation of BrownWeld and Wunder (1976) was 1,469 mOsm kg ¡1 . Slaven and Richardson (1988) concluded that the kidneys of the honey possum are very similar in form to those of frugivorous bats (Studier et al 1983) with a large renal cortex in relation to the renal medulla and high rates of urine production.…”
