A survey was conducted to evaluate the multi-exposure level and correlation among toxic metal biomarkers (Cd, Pb, and Hg). A total of 592 individuals who participated in the survey were residents near an industrial complex in Gwangyang and Yeosu (exposed group) and of Hadong and Namhae (control group) in southern Korea from May 2007 to November 2010. The Gwangyang and Yeosu area exposed groups had slightly higher blood Pb (2.21 and 1.90 µg/dL), urinary Cd observed values (2.20 and 1.46 µg/L), urinary Cd with a urinary creatinine correction (1.43 and 1.25 µg/g Cr), and urinary Hg observed values (2.26 and 0.98 µg/L) in women participants than those in the Hadong and Namhae area (control group). Blood Pb (3.18 and 2.55 µg/dL), urinary Hg observed values (1.14 and 0.92 µg/L), and urinary Hg with a urinary creatinine correction (1.06 and 0.96 µg/L) for male participants were also slightly higher than those in the Hadong and Namhae area (control group). The correlation among urinary Cd, Hg and Pb concentrations in the blood was significant. We suggest that the exposed group of residents were simultaneously exposed to Pb, Cd, and Hg from contaminated ambient air originating from the iron manufacturing industrial complex.

Zusammenfassung:In der Pilotstudie des Kinder-Umwelt-Surveys (KUS) wurden die Urine von 2-bis 17-jährigen Kindern aus vier Orten in Deutschland auf ihre Gehalte an Organophosphat-und Pyrethroidmetaboliten untersucht (N = 396 bzw. 363). Die 95. Perzentile der Gehalte der Pyrethroidmetabolite betrugen: cisCl 2 CA 0,74 g/l, trans-Cl 2 CA 1,7 g/l, Br 2 CA 0,52 g/l, F-PBA <0,1 g/ l, 3-PBA 2,4 g/l. 3-PBA wurde in 90 % der Proben nachgewiesen. Für die Organophosphatmetaboliten wurden die folgenden Werte für das 95. Perzentil bestimmt: DMP 118 g/l, DEP 20 g/l, DMTP 124 g/l, DETP 11 g/l, DMDTP 11 g/l, DEDTP <1,0 g/l. DMTP war der am häufi gsten bestimmbare Metabolit.Die Verknüpfung der Metabolitgehalte mit erhobenen Fragebogendaten mittels multivariater statistischer Verfahren ergab, dass für die Organophosphate neben dem Lebensalter das Wohnen in städtischen Bereichen und die Jahreszeit zu einer Erhöhung der mittleren Gehalte der Metabolite führen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auch, dass der Konsum von frischen Früchten und Fruchtsaft von Bedeutung sein könnte, wobei allerdings nicht ausgeschlossen werden kann, dass nicht die Wirksubstanz selbst, sondern die Metabolite mit der Nahrung aufgenommen werden. Hierzu sollten weitere Studien durchgeführt werden.Die Exposition gegenüber Pyrethroiden wird bestimmt durch das Lebensalter, den Probe nahmeort, den Konsum von gekochtem Gemüse und die Verwendung von Pyrethroiden im häuslichen Innenraum. Die signifi kante Korrelation zwischen den Metabolitgehalten im Urin und den Permethringehalten im Hausstaub zeigt, dass Hausstaub eine Quelle für die Belastung von Kindern darstellen kann. Wahrscheinlich ist dies auf die Staubaufnahme durch Hand-zu-Mund-Kontakt zurückzuführen.Abstract: In the pilot study of GerES IV, metabolites of pyrethroids and organophosporus pesticides were analysed in urine of children aged 2 to 17 years (N = 396 and 363, respectively). The 95th percentiles for the metabolites of the pyrethroids were (in g/l urine): cis-DCCA 0.74, trans-DCCA 1.7, DBCA 0.52, F-PBA <0.1, and 3-PBA 2.4 g/l. 3-PBA was detected in 90 % of the samples. The 95th percentiles for the organophosphorus metabolites were (in g/l urine): DMP 118, DEP 20, DMTP 124, DETP 11, DMDTP 11, DEDTP <1.0. DMTP was the metabolite most frequently detected in the samples.Based on multivariate evaluation using questionnaire data and the metabolite levels analysed in urine, the exposure to organophosphorus pesticides is mainly infl uenced by age, living in an urban area, and season. The results of this study indicate that for children the consumption of fresh fruits and fruit juices can be relevant sources for these pesticides or their metabolites. Further work is needed to corroborate this tentative result.The exposure to pyrethroids is infl uenced by age, sampling location, consumption of boiled vegetables and the use of biocides indoors at home. The German Environmental Survey for Children (GerES IV) is the environment-related module of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS) of the Robert Koch Institute and the fourth GerES of the Federal Environment Agency. The main objective of GerESs is to analyse and document the extent, distribution and determinants of exposure to environmental pollutants of the German general population. GerES IV was performed from 2003 to 2006. A total of 1.790 children aged 3-14 years from 150 sampling locations participated in GerES IV. Samples of blood, urine, tap water, house dust and indoor air were analysed. Hearing tests, measurements of traffic noise and interviews to get exposure-related information were conducted. First results indicate a clear decrease of the exposure to arsenic, lead and mercury. Cotinine concentrations in urine can be used to classify the exposure of children to environmental tobacco smoke. The examination of the tap water used in the subjects' households indicates that in some households the guideline values of the German Drinking Water Ordinance were not always met. This is the case for nickel, copper and lead which are used as pipe material for domestic plumbing.
