Korean translation and validation of the Community Commitment Scale for preventing social isolation in older adults

Abstract: The CCS-K has acceptable internal consistency, concurrent validity and construct validity among Korean local volunteers. Thus, we can conclude that the CCS-K can be effectively applied. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2018; 18: 806-812.

“…Internal consistency reliability of the BSCS was good ( α = 0.85) and is comparable to other validation studies of α = 0.85–0.92 (Lardier, Reid, et al, 2018; Peterson et al, 2008); studies that have used the BSCS with older adults, α = 0.79–0.94 (Au et al, 2020; Guo et al, 2021; Kim et al, 2018; Kono et al, 2012; Tadaka et al, 2016; Tang et al, 2021; Zhang et al, 2017, 2018; Zhang, 2019; Zheng et al, 2020); and studies with Spanish‐speakers, α = 0.85–0.93 (Hombrados‐Mendieta et al, 2013; Rivera‐Segarra et al, 2016). Good reliability across diverse samples of older adults shows promise of the cross‐cultural utility of the BSCS.…”

“…A large gap in the PSOC literature is the lack of psychometric studies of the BSCS with older adults. Researchers have used the BSCS with samples of older adults in Hong Kong (Au et al, 2020; Guo et al, 2021; Tang et al, 2021), China (Zhang, 2019; Zheng et al, 2020), Korea (Kim et al, 2018), and Japan (Kono et al, 2012; Tadaka et al, 2016). But most of these studies report only internal consistency reliability so the validity of the scale remains unclear.…”

“…It is well‐established that the proportion of the elderly population has been increasing dramatically around the world 8 . In comparison with the young population, elderly people have a higher incidence of rapid renal function decline and CKD, 10–12 being worthy of more concern and investigation.…”

“…2,7 Thus, it is necessary to explore potential factors related with rapid eGFR decline, which can facilitate targeted prevention and intervention for higher-risk subgroups. 2 Globally, the proportion of elderly population has been increasing dramatically, 8 in particular China's population has 180 million people aged ≥65 years, accounting for 13% of the whole population in 2020. 9 Importantly, compared with the young population, elderly people have a higher incidence of rapid renal function decline and CKD, [10][11][12] which is worthy of more concern and investigation.…”

“…The Community Commitment Scale (CCS) is a scale used to assess sense of community, which was developed by considering the cultural diversity of Japanese people who value relationships with neighbors and communities but who inhabit a limited land area on the Japanese islands [ 35 ]. Previous studies in Japan [ 36 ] and Korea [ 37 ] have demonstrated that the CCS can be used to psychometrically measure older adults’ socialization and sense of belonging via the strength of their community networks and that the CCS is a useful indicator to monitor older adults living in the community who may be socially isolated. The CCS has a Cronbach’s alpha (which conveys the internal consistency of the scale) of 0.75 in local volunteers and 0.78 in general residents.…”
