Abstract: In this study of women's handicrafts, some aspects of the situation of women in the Toucouleur and Sarakole society are highlighted. Among independent income-earning women, the article concentrates on the craftswomen rather than the tradeswomen, looking specifically at potters and dyers because these activities are the most commonly practised.
