Laboratory biosafety measures involving SARS-CoV-2 and the classification as a Risk Group 3 biological agent

Abstract: The current public health emergency surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, that is the illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has resulted in thousands of cases in Australia since 25 January 2020 when the first case was diagnosed. This emerging virus presents particular hazards to researchers and laboratory staff in a clinical setting, highlighted by rapid and widespread global transmission. Based on the epidemiological and clinical data that have become available in mid-20… Show more

“…In spite of the wide detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA on surfaces by RT-qPCR and ddRT-qPCR, viable viruses were not yet confirmed. Most studies do not include viral infectivity assays because this requires SARS-CoV-2 propagation in cell culture that is only allowed in biosafety level 3 facilities (not widely available) ( Kaufer et al, 2020 ). Laboratory experiments with spiked samples have shown SARS-CoV-2 is stable in certain environmental conditions.…”

“…Due to the serious health risks associated with working with SARS-CoV-2, it requires high levels of biosafety containment which is achievable only at selected laboratories [ 44 ]. Hence, the work presented in this paper was performed with FIPV, which was used as a surrogate/model virus for SARS-CoV-2.…”

“…The combined effect of impaction, interception, and diffusion processes is that particles of all sizes whether higher or lower than 0.3 µ m are arrested in the HEPA filter ( First, 1998 ). The particles of size 0.3 µ m are called the most penetrating particles.…”
