“…Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are not considered typical members of the freshwater microbial communities as they generally are associated with terrestrial plant materials, animals and food products (Di Cagno et al, 2013; Duar et al, 2017; Endo et al, 2009; Groenewald et al, 2006; Koch & Schmid‐Hempel, 2011; Krumbeck et al, 2016; Martin & Mundt, 1972; Rokop et al, 2015; Ruiz Rodríguez et al, 2019). Thus, relatively few studies report their presence in freshwater environments, such as ponds, lakes and pristine brooks (Korzeniowski et al, 2020; Leisner et al, 2008; Manes‐Lazaro et al, 2009; Niemi et al, 2012; Signoretto et al, 2004; Yanagida et al, 2007). The composition of microbial communities of freshwater differs to some degree from those encountered in terrestrial and marine habitats (Newton et al, 2011; Pernthaler & Amann, 2005) but smaller freshwater systems, such as ponds, bogs and springs, may to a larger degree be affected by influx from the surrounding terrestrial environment.…”
